Earth Day on Kaua‘i with The Friends of Kamalani & Lydgate Beach Park

Every April, the Friends of Kamalani & Lydgate Park invite Kaua‘i’s community and visitors to celebrate Earth Day with a park-wide clean-up event at Kamalani Playground and Lydgate Beach Park. Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22, is a global event that encourages people to take action in support of environmental protection. First observed in 1970, Earth Day has grown into the largest secular observance in the world, with over a billion people participating in activities across more than 190 countries.

Earth Day serves as a reminder of the importance of taking collective action for environmental protection, and the Friends of Kamalani & Lydgate Park exemplify this spirit through their ongoing efforts at Lydgate Beach Park. Since the formation of Tobacco-Free Kaua‘i in 1998, the coalition has been an active partner, supporting the Friends of Kamalani & Lydgate Park in maintaining and preserving the beach park. In October 2016, Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. signed a proclamation designating the Kamalani Playground area tobacco-free, and over the years, coalition members have collaborated with the Friends of Kamalani & Lydgate Park on numerous clean-ups and organized cigarette butt pick-ups, furthering their shared mission to protect the park, support state and county level tobacco-free policies, and enhance the health of the community.

Last April, the annual Earth Day event was postponed due to the effects of severe flooding, but this year the Friends of Kamalani & Lydgate Park are excited to welcome volunteers back for a day of community-driven environmental action. On Saturday, April 26, 2025, come lend a hand in maintaining and beautifying the park. Check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Kamalani Playground. Learn more about Earth Day in Lydgate Beach Park here.

The Friends of Kamalani & Lydgate Park also host a weekly clean-up surrounding Morgan’s Pond every Saturday morning. Volunteers are asked to meet near the lifeguard tower by 8:30 a.m.
