Empowering Wellness: HEAL Coalition Sprouts Roots on Hawai‘i Island

In a vibrant and diverse community like Hawai‘i Island, fostering health and well-being becomes a collective responsibility. With this vision in mind, a groundbreaking initiative is taking root–the establishment of a Healthy Eating + Active Living (HEAL) Coalition on Hawai‘i Island. This coalition aims to bring together individuals, organizations, and stakeholders committed to enhancing the overall health landscape of Hawai‘i Island. Hawai‘i Island is known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage. However, like any community, it faces unique health challenges that require a collaborative and comprehensive approach. The Hawai‘i Island HEAL Coalition emerges as a response to these challenges, envisioning a future where every resident has the opportunity to thrive in good health.

The HEAL Coalition is founded on collaboration, education, and advocacy principles. Its mission is to create a unified force to promote physical activities, provide access to healthy foods, and foster a culture of well-being on Hawai‘i Island. By bringing diverse perspectives and expertise together, the coalition aims to develop and implement effective strategies that positively impact the community’s health.

The mission of the statewide HEAL Coalition is to create a future in which all Hawai‘i residents are physically active, eat healthy foods, and live in healthy communities. HEAL is a statewide initiative with active coalitions and networks on Hawaiʻi Island, Kauaʻi, O‘ahu, and Maui County (Maui, Molokai, and Lānaʻi), and is a program of the Hawaiʻi Public Health Institute (HIPHI). The HEAL coalition is composed of volunteer stakeholders representing various businesses, government, organizations, and community members.

The Hawai‘i Island HEAL Coalition will actively engage with local communities to understand their unique health needs and challenges. By fostering open dialogue, the HEAL Coalition aims to build trust and create tailored initiatives that resonate with the community. The HEAL Coalition will collaborate with local organizations, businesses, and healthcare providers to mobilize resources to support health and education initiatives. The coalition will advocate for policies that promote health equity, accessibility to healthy food, and overall community well-being. By actively participating in the policymaking progress, the HEAL Coalition seeks to influence positive change at the local level. A cornerstone of the HEAL Coalition’s work is education. Through workshops, seminars, and outreach programs, the coalition aims to raise awareness about healthy lifestyles, promoting access to healthy foods, and the importance of our overall health and well-being.

One of the defining features of the Hawai‘i Island HEAL Coalition is its emphasis on community involvement. Residents, healthcare professionals, educators, and businesses are all encouraged to actively participate, share their insights, and contribute to the development of this coalition. As the Hawai‘i Island HEAL Coalition takes its first steps, we plan as coordinators to connect and introduce the initiative. These collaborative efforts will shape the direction and focus of the coalition’s work.

As the HEAL Coalition takes root on Hawai‘i Island, it symbolizes a collective commitment to building a healthier and more resilient future. Together, we can create positive and lasting change that reverberates across generations.
