Please join us for the annual Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawai‘i Stakeholder Meeting and Alaka‘i Awards Ceremony! Our keynote speaker this year is Dr. Robert N. Proctor, History of Science professor at Stanford University and award-winning author. He was the first historian to testify against the tobacco industry as an expert witness in court (1998). He continues to do so, both in the U.S. and abroad. In his written work, Dr. Proctor explores how tobacco companies and other corporate and political powers use inaccurate or misleading scientific data to create cultural doubt around complicated issues. From the tobacco epidemic to environmental denialism, he has examined what keeps ignorance alive in our culture and how it has been used as a political instrument.
Dr. Proctor has authored several books, including Golden Holocaust, a compelling narrative on the conspiracy by tobacco manufacturers to obscure scientific consensus on the hazards of tobacco use, and How Technology and Marketing Changed Desire, which explores the prehistory of modern addictions, from sugar to cigarettes.
