Fundamentals of Domestic Violence 101: Understanding People Who Choose To Use Violence on Their Intimate Partners

Understanding people who choose to use violence on their intimate partners is sometimes challenging when the violence used is destructive. This training discusses why society needs to start working effectively with the people who use violence, and effective intervention begins with understanding how they think and behave. This training will explain the beliefs and behaviors of the people using violence through their most commonly uttered phrases. The training will further discuss tools on how to help and intervene with this population. The training will wrap up with how they parent both in the relationship and post-separation.

Objectives:

1) Participants will be able to name 3 intervention goals in working with people who use violence against their intimate partners
2) Participants will learn 2 common beliefs of people who use violence against their intimate partners
3) Participants will learn 2 tools to intervene with people who use violence against their intimate partners
4) Participants will learn 2 coercive control tactics using the children to maintain control over the intimate partner

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by the Hawaii Public Health Institute and the Western Region Public Health Training Center (WRPHTC). The WRPHTC is jointed accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continued Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
