Hawaiʻi Health Professionals Training: Environmental Health Concerns of the Maui Wildfires

During this training, we will overview the major environmental health concerns associated with the Maui Wildfires. This presentation will focus on chemical contaminants and heavy metals that may be present in various environmental media (e.g., water, soil, ash) as a result of the fires. Known health risks associated with contaminants that may be in the environment, and, where data are available, symptoms that may indicate toxicity among people with high levels of contaminant exposure will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives. Participants will gain understandings to:

  1. Routes of exposure to contaminants resulting from wildfires and vulnerable populations;
  2. Chemical contaminants of concern;
  3. Health effects of chemical contaminants;
  4. Tips for avoiding chemical exposure.
  5. /ol>

    *1.5 credit hours for SW, CSAC, and CPS pending approval*
