HIPHI Welcomes our Newest Program: Hawai‘i Immunization Coalition

  • News

The Hawai’i Immunization Coalition (HIC) officially joined HIPHI in January of this year and has been meeting monthly to plan, strategize, and discuss the ever-changing federal immunization landscape.

Since 1996, HIC has worked to ensure Hawai‘i’s families are protected against vaccine-preventable diseases through immunization, education, and advocacy. The coalition brings together healthcare providers, clinicians, researchers, and public health professionals from diverse organizations statewide. Its commitment to ensuring that everyone is immunized across the lifespan has become even more crucial in recent times. With the politicization of vaccines, rampant misinformation, and the rise of anti-science ideologies, public health has been put at risk, and this work is more important than ever. Many families and community members have had to navigate confusing vaccine guidance and misleading online information that fuel fear and distrust. Becoming a program of HIPHI brings new and exciting opportunities for HIC to address these challenges.

At our first in-person meeting this September, HIC Advisory Committee members reaffirmed the coalition’s vision and, together with HIPHI, realigned our goals and objectives for the coming year. We discussed plans around outreach, education, and policy, and identified the most attainable short-term activities. For example, continuing to offer regular education and training opportunities for healthcare professionals was recognized as highly valuable by HIC’s current audience. HIC will also focus on growing our reach, re-engaging with past partners, and developing a plan to strengthen policy and advocacy efforts.

At HIPHI, we understand the power of coalitions in bringing about actionable change. HIC is poised to fill a vital gap in Hawai‘i’s vaccine and immunization landscape. We hope this partnership will expand our ability to support Hawai‘i’s healthcare providers, public health professionals, and communities, and enable HIC to become a strong and trusted voice in Hawai‘i. We are excited about the opportunities ahead and look forward to working together to empower families and ensure that everyone has access to life-saving vaccines.
