HYFC: Growing New Leaders for Hawai‘i’s Food Future

The Hawai‘i Youth Food Council (HYFC) is thriving, nurturing a new generation of food system leaders across the islands. Following a successful membership drive, HYFC now includes 21 members from O‘ahu, Maui, Hawai‘i Island, and Lāna‘i, and has expanded to welcome three college students into the council.

This fall, members have been deepening their understanding of Hawai‘i’s food system through discussions on “The Big Picture of Food Systems” and “Power Mapping.” Guest speakers—including HIPHI’s James McCallen, Senator Mike Gabbard, and Parker Kushima of the Hawai‘i State Energy Office—helped youth explore the connections between food, climate, energy, and health.

HYFC’s statewide presence has also continued to grow through participation in major events. Maui members represented at the Maui Nui Food Summit, attending keynote sessions and breakout discussions. HYFC youth also presented at the Schools of the Future Conference, leading a session on strengthening youth leadership in Hawai‘i’s food system and joining a panel on youth voice for advocacy.

In November, members took part in the Climate Future Forum at the Hawai‘i State Capitol, where youth and legislators shared visions for a sustainable future. HYFC also collaborated with the Hawai‘i Youth Transportation Council on a field trip exploring the intersections of transportation, energy, and food systems by visiting Kuilima Farms, Kahuku Farms, and Par Pacific Hawai‘i.

Looking ahead, HYFC members are preparing to participate in the Hawai‘i Food Systems Summit this December. These experiences serve as off-season training, helping youth build knowledge and confidence to craft authentic, experience-informed testimony during the 2026 legislative session.
