Hawaiʻi Youth Food Council Spring Update

HYFC 2022 Legislative Update

With the revival of the Policy Committee in late Fall 2021, Hawaiʻi Youth Food Council (HYFC) has rapidly increased our involvement in the 2022 State Legislative Session. HYFC Members Yewon (Julie) Jeong and Tyler Levine were elected as co-chairs of the committee. Members collaborated to identify policy priorities and draft written testimony on several bills relating to food systems and farm to school education. Committee co-chair Tyler Levine has submitted written testimony and provided verbal testimony on several of these bills, including Senate Bill SB2959 at the Joint Senate Hearing of the Senate Committees on Agriculture & Environment (AEN) and Higher Education (HRE). Additionally, the companion House Bill HB1844 at the House Hearing of the Committee on Higher Education & Technology (HET). This bill would appropriate funds for the establishment of one full-time agriculture education coordinator position at the University of Hawai‘i College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources. The Policy Committee is excited to continue providing a youth voice at the legislature and hopes to inspire other young people to become more civically engaged.

We Grow Hawaiʻi 2022!

Hawaiʻi Youth Food Council (HYFC) is thrilled to announce that we are hosting We Grow Hawaiʻi: A Youth Food Summit in April of 2022. Please save the date and join us on Friday April 29th and Saturday April 30th. (More details to come!) We Grow Hawai‘i  has happened annually in the Spring for many years now. Last year was the first time the summit was run online and led by youth members of HYFC! We are so excited to host this summit again this year and carry forward our goal of promoting youth voices and inspiring youth involvement in Hawai‘i’s food systems. Our event will feature three themed panel discussions and is open to all ages, but we would like to especially invite our middle and high school aged peers to attend. If you are interested in learning more about the event or possibly even participating as a guest panelist or presentor, please contact us at or visit the HYFC website.
