Kalāheo Elementary’s Safe Routes to School Program Builds a Culture of Safety and Wellness

Kalāheo Elementary School’s first Walk to School Day took place on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, when more than 100 students, parents, and staff participated in the school’s inaugural Walking School Bus event. This initiative marked the beginning of a long-term commitment to promoting safe, healthy, and active transportation options for students. Since then, Kalāheo Elementary has continued to expand its Safe Routes to School (SRTS) and Walking School Bus programs, fostering a lasting culture of wellness, safety, and community engagement.

Walking School Bus Initiative

One of the cornerstones of Kalāheo Elementary’s SRTS efforts is its Walking School Bus program, where students walk to school in supervised groups along designated routes— just like a school bus, but on foot. The program offers a variety of benefits:

• Enhancing Student Safety: Adult supervision ensures a safe and structured commute for students.
• Promoting Physical Activity: Walking to school helps kids stay active and develop lifelong healthy habits.
• Reducing Traffic Congestion: Fewer cars at drop-off means a safer, more efficient school zone.
• Strengthening Community Ties: Students, families, staff, and neighbors bond through shared experiences.

Keeping it Fun with Themed Walk to School Days

To boost participation and excitement, Kalāheo Elementary hosts themed Walk to School Days throughout the year.. These creative themes bring joy to the journey and give students something special to look forward to. Popular themes have included:

• Valentine’s Day Colors: Wear pink, white, or red
• Disney March: Dress as a favorite Disney character
• Aloha Wear: Wear aloha attire for Lei Day
• Pajama Parade: Roll out of bed and walk in cozy PJs
• May the 4th Be with You: A Star Wars-themed walk
• Walk with Santa: A festive holiday stroll

These fun events not only increase engagement but also bring joy and creativity to the school community while reinforcing the importance of walking and healthy habits.

Collaboration with Get Fit Kaua‘i

Kalāheo Elementary is an active member of Get Fit Kaua‘i’s island-wide Safe Routes to School Task Force. This collaborative group brings together schools, public health advocates, community organizations, and local agencies to improve student safety and promote active transportation. 

A vital partner in these efforts is the Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD), which supports Walk to School Days by providing traffic control, safety education, and a strong community presence.

In addition to strategic support, Get Fit Kaua‘i donates a new bicycle each year for a special end-of-year giveaway. Students earn entries by participating in the Walking School Bus program, adding a fun and rewarding incentive for staying active.

Lasting Impact

Kalāheo Elementary’s success with Safe Routes to School and Walking School Bus programs is a powerful example of what’s possible when schools and communities work together. Through collective effort, students gain safer routes to school, healthier daily routines, and a deeper sense of community connection.
