Taking public transit is more than just an eco-friendly and cost-effective way to get around—it also naturally increases physical activity. Unlike driving door-to-door, transit riders often walk or bike to and from bus stops, climb stairs, and stand while waiting, all of which contribute to better cardiovascular health and increased daily movement. These small bursts of activity add up, supporting weight management and overall fitness. Additionally, public transit encourages a more active lifestyle by integrating movement into daily routines, improving mental well-being, and reducing stress.
Recognizing the importance of a convenient and efficient transit experience, the Kaua‘i Bus announced on January 13, 2025 the launch of a new digital fare payment system. Powered by Masabi’s Justride platform, the system allows passengers to purchase single-ride tickets, day passes, monthly passes, and annual passes directly through the Kaua‘i Bus app. Riders can also manage their Stored Value Accounts (SVA) via the app or an online portal, making transit more accessible and flexible. To streamline boarding and reduce wait times, ticket validators have been installed throughout the bus fleet.
Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami praised the initiative as a step toward modernizing public services. “This new mobile ticketing app makes it easier than ever for residents and visitors to ride the Kaua‘i Bus,” he said. Transportation Agency Executive Celia Mahikoa echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the system’s role in improving accessibility and efficiency.
This launch marks the first phase of a broader effort to enhance Kaua‘i’s public transit system. Future plans include introducing Account-Based Ticketing (ABT) and Open Payments, which will enable fare capping and expanded payment options, including smartcards, contactless bank cards, and mobile wallets. Masabi CEO Brian Zanghi highlighted the significance of mobile ticketing in improving public transit, stating, “Together, we are not only enhancing the travel experience for passengers but also helping to build a more efficient and sustainable public transportation network.”
As a longtime advocate for health and wellness on the island, Get Fit Kaua‘i recognizes the impact of accessible transportation on community well-being. This initiative aligns with its mission by promoting active transportation, encouraging movement, and making it easier for residents to choose healthier, more sustainable travel options. With the integration of new technology, public transit continues to provide a convenient and user-friendly way to stay active, whether for daily commutes or occasional trips.
