Kaua‘i County Council Supports Universal Free School Meals

On February 26, 2025, the Kaua‘i County Council unanimously passed  resolution 2025-19, urging the state legislature to support a universal free school breakfast and lunch program. This initiative aims to ensure that all students have access to nutritious meals, regardless of their financial situation.

Council members emphasized the importance of healthy meals in supporting student well-being, academic success, and overall health. Advocates argue that eliminating meal costs removes the stigma associated with free or reduced-price lunch programs and reduces administrative burdens on families and schools.

Bev Brody and other members of Get Fit Kaua‘i were in attendance to show their strong support for the resolution. Get Fit Kaua‘i has long been a champion for health and wellness initiatives on the island, and this effort aligns with its mission to improve community well-being.

With rising food costs and growing concerns about childhood hunger, Kaua‘i leaders are calling on state lawmakers to prioritize this initiative. The resolution adds momentum to ongoing statewide efforts to make Hawai‘i’s public schools nourishing places where no child goes hungry.
