Kaua‘i Welcomes New Safe Routes to School Coordinator

Written by Bev Brody

Kaua‘i is excited to welcome Keith Hatcher as its new Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Coordinator. With a 30-year career as a classroom teacher and principal, Keith brings extensive experience and a lifelong passion for education and active living.

A dedicated bicycle commuter, longtime pedestrian, and Ironman triathlete, Keith knows firsthand the benefits of active transportation. “I believe government and nonprofits play a crucial role in supporting safer routes to school—not just for underrepresented communities, but for the health and well-being of everyone,” he says. “When more kids can safely walk and bike, we see healthier lifestyles, stronger communities, fewer traffic-related injuries, less congestion around schools, and even reduced vehicle emissions. Everyone benefits.”

Keith has called Kaua‘i home for the past 10 years, after moving from Madison, Wisconsin—a city known for its robust active transportation system. He is eager to bring bicycle education programs to Kaua‘i’s students and build strong connections with schools across the island, encouraging more children to walk and bike safely to school.

As a father of four, Keith approaches Kaua‘i’s student transportation challenges with the insight of a parent, teacher, and principal combined. He will work closely with Bev Brody of Get Fit Kaua‘i to bring dynamic and robust SRTS programs to the island. With his leadership, Kaua‘i is poised to foster safer, healthier, and more active communities for students across the island.
