Keiki Heroes: Promoting Vision Health for Our Keiki

Excerpts from the new Keiki Heroes activity book that focuses on vision health in partnership with Project Vision Hawaiʻi.

A new activity book, Kai and Hōkū: Let’s Care for Our Eyes, is now available for download on the Keiki Heroes website, promoting vision health. Project Vision Hawaiʻi (Project Vision), a HIPHI partner, collaborated with HIPHI’s staff, Jaylen Murakami and May Rose Dela Cruz, to develop this edition. The idea grew from conversations during the COVID-19 pandemic about promoting vision health through a coloring book that Project Vision could distribute at their mobile clinics and school health events.

In this edition, our Keiki Heroes, cousins Kai and Hōkū, are watching a baseball game with their family. The story highlights how glasses are important not only for playing the game but also for enjoying it as a spectator. The activity book also features interactive elements, including a screening maze, a superfoods word search, and a design-your-own glasses activity. 

This project was made possible through funding from the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM), National Institutes of Health (NIH) under a cooperative agreement with the University of Washington (UG4LM013725). The English version is now available for download, with Tagalog, Ilokano, and Marshallese versions coming soon.
