Public Health Career Pathway: Explore the Public Health Field Through Internships

HIPHI’s internship program provides an experiential learning opportunity for current students and recent graduates interested in public health. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, HIPHI has received an increased number of applications for a limited number of internship positions. Due to the high volume of applications, we are currently prioritizing applicants from the state of Hawai‘i—those who are currently studying in the state or returning home to Hawai‘i from the continental United States.

Internships are not considered work experience, but here are some reasons why public health internships can help you enter into the public health field:

1. Experiential learning opportunities can help you learn new skills and practice skills while working on a project.
2. Interns will have one or more final work products that showcase their talent.
3. Interns can ask their internship supervisor to become their “reference” person for job applications—someone who can discuss their work skills and professionalism.
4. Interns can participate and network with HIPHI’s staff and coalition members during meetings and events.

HIPHI’s interns are public health majors (66%) in various other programs, such as political science, kinesiology, nursing, biology, and psychology. Non-public health majors can learn more about public health and the type of roles public health professionals play during their internship. Interns will be required to complete an orientation, which provides in-depth background information about HIPHI and what we do, who we serve, and what we want to achieve.

Other training opportunities include the following:

1. Public Health Training Hui (PHTH): Free monthly webinars on various public health topics.
2. Perspectives in Community Health: Field trips that showcase the intersection between community programs and public health.
3. Webinars about HIPHI’s programs or upon request from interns.
