Sip Smart with Mālaʻai: Nourishing Hawaiʻi’s Youth with Healthier Choices

To align with our mission to promote health and wellness across Hawaiʻi Island, the Healthy Eating + Active Living (HEAL) coalition recently partnered with Māla‘ai: The Culinary Garden of Waimea Middle School, further strengthening our commitment to nutrition education. Through this partnership, we had the opportunity to engage with students in a meaningful discussion about the impact of sugar on health, particularly its connection to diabetes and other health disparities. During our recent visit to Māla‘ai Garden, we led an interactive presentation highlighting the ways excessive sugar consumption contributes to chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. The goal of this presentation was to better understand their sugar intake, increase awareness of added sugars, and understand their potential effects on health and behavior. By connecting these health challenges to real-world dietary habits, we encouraged students to think critically about the food choices they make every day.

Māla‘ai Garden provides an enriching, hands-on learning environment, enabling students to experience firsthand the benefits of growing and consuming fresh, whole foods. Our discussion naturally complemented the garden’s mission to strengthen the connection between people, land, culture, and food. By integrating scientific knowledge with practical experience, students gained a deeper understanding of how sugar consumption influences overall well-being. Our Hawai‘i Island HEAL team played a vital role in delivering this impactful message to the students of Waimea Middle School. As part of the learning experience, students participated in a hands-on sugar demonstration activity, where they calculated the sugar content in various sugary beverages. This eye-opening exercise helped them visualize the hidden sugars in popular drinks and understand their impact on health. Additionally, students engaged in a fun and educational activity of making “soda” using natural sweeteners derived from ingredients grown in the garden. This activity emphasized the benefits of using natural sugars and healthier alternatives, reinforcing the idea that small, conscious choices can lead to better health outcomes. This partnership underscores the importance of community-based health education. By working together with programs like Māla‘ai Garden, we can continue to empower young individuals with the knowledge and tools to make informed dietary choices that support long-term health.

Diabetes is a growing public health concern in Hawai‘i, affecting approximately 11.2% of adults. The prevalence of diabetes increases with age, impacting about 4.3% of individuals aged 18-44, 14.3% of those aged 45-64, and nearly 21.9% of those 65 and older. The effects of diabetes can be severe, leading to complications such as nerve damage, kidney failure, vision loss, and increased risk of heart disease. Many individuals diagnosed with diabetes must make drastic lifestyle adjustments, including strict dietary modifications, regular blood sugar monitoring, and in some cases, insulin therapy. However, the encouraging fact is that Type 2 diabetes, which accounts for the majority of cases, is largely preventable through proper nutrition, exercise, and healthy lifestyle choices.

We look forward to further collaborations and initiatives that inspire healthier communities through education, awareness, and action. Mahalo to Māla‘ai Garden for providing a space where learning and wellness grow together!
