Saturday, August 20th was the return of in-person Youth Council meetings with our 2022 Kickoff Event. After 2 years of Zoom meetings, the 20 youth from 12 different schools and 2 islands were excited to meet face-to-face.
Cautious but Connected
With COVID counts still a concern, participants were limited, however we had a record number of Big Island youth participate. Students heard directly about the dangers of vaping from double lung transplant recipient Daniel Ament. Daniel, who was 17 at the time of his surgery, shared his story via Zoom with the group and answered questions they had regarding his near death experience from vaping.
The students watched fellow Youth Council members present the Taking Down Tobacco presentation and were able to practice delivering it themselves. By the end of the day they reported feeling much more confident in their ability to deliver this presentation to other youth in their community.
It wasn’t all work – students participated in a wide range of icebreakers and team building activities and left having made new friends that share their passions and want to make a difference in the lives of their peers.
The Youth Council’s next event is an Awareness Building Workshop being held in November. If you know a student that might want to get involved, have them go to www.hiphi.org/youth for more information.
