The Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawai‘i has been spearheading efforts to reduce the harms of commercial tobacco in Hawai‘i. We’ve made significant strides in reducing tobacco use over the last 30 years, with one of the lowest smoking rates in the nation. Hawai‘i was one of the first states to pass a comprehensive smoke-free air law in 2006, protecting people from secondhand smoke in restaurants, bars, and workplaces. In 2016, Hawai‘i became the first US state to raise the age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21. In 2023, the Coalition succeeded in passing comprehensive e-cigarette regulations which redefined electronic smoking devices and e-liquids as tobacco products, imposing a heavy 70% wholesale tax, and strictly regulating online and remote sales to curb youth access. In 2026, Hawai‘i became the first US state to end the sale of disposable e-cigarettes protecting not only the health of our community but also our environment.
Despite this progress, our community continues to see disparities in tobacco use. We continue to advocate for comprehensive regulations on all tobacco products, to advance health and truly eliminate the burden of commercial tobacco in our community.
