Earlier this year, Hawai‘i Public Health Institute and the Hawai‘i State Department of Health partnered to launch the “Stronger Together: We See/They See” Campaign to highlight the tactics Big Tobacco uses to target our keiki.
While we see curiosity, creativity, and ambition in our keiki, Big Tobacco sees one thing: customers. The tobacco industry spends $24 million each year in marketing to protect their profit and use sweet, candy-flavors in tobacco to hook our keiki onto nicotine. But Hawai‘i residents have stood up to Big Tobacco before, passing strong smoke-free air laws and becoming the first state in the nation to raise the age to purchase tobacco products to 21.
