Welcoming H3RC: Care, Support, and Connection on Kauaʻi
If you’re told to seek Kaua‘i’s newest services at H3RC, you might be wondering, “What’s H-Three-R-C?” H3RC stands for Hawai‘i Health and Harm Reduction Center, and if you’ve noticed their growing presence at community events, you’re not mistaken.
H3RC (formerly the CHOW Project) has been active on Kaua‘i providing outreach services aimed at reducing harm and fighting the stigma associated with HIV, hepatitis, houselessness, substance use, mental illness, and poverty. Recently, they expanded their services by establishing a permanent satellite office on Kaua‘i, which now includes tobacco cessation services, filling an important gap on the island. When Kaua‘i faced the loss of a cessation provider, H3RC stepped in, working with the Hawai‘i Community Foundation to continue the funded work. As a result, Kaua‘i will once again have two funded cessation providers serving the community.
These cessation services are especially timely for Kaua‘i residents who want to quit. With new state tobacco laws set to take effect at the end of this year, some residents may find their usual products are no longer accessible. While some welcome these changes as the motivation they need to finally become tobacco-free, others may prefer professional support throughout the quitting process. H3RC have been a standing member of the statewide Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawai‘i, but with staff now on Kaua‘i, Tobacco-Free Kaua‘i (TFK) is pleased to have them participate at a local level.
With H3RC’s trusted care already established on O‘ahu, the Kaua‘i community can now access these essential services as well.
