On July 15, 2018, Koloa Landing Resort & Spa (Autograph Collection) officially enacted a tobacco-free policy for their associates. The new tobacco policy prohibits tobacco use while on the job, including during breaks, on or off the property. Guests will continue to be protected by the statewide smoke-free law which prohibits smoking indoors or within 20 feet from a door, window, or ventilation system.
All current associates signed a form addressing the new tobacco-free policy as part of their employee handbook. On the Koloa Landing’s website, the policy is already stated for anyone seeking employment and all future employees will be informed of the policy when hired. So far, no one has violated this policy, but if an associate does, it will be handled as a job performance issue.
Discussions of a tobacco-free policy started this past January. There was support from the ownership and management of Koloa Landing Resort to move towards a 100% tobacco ban, but some of the associates were concerned. That is when management reached out to Malama Pono Health Services to provide group cessation treatment to assist smokers willing to quit. The first round was successful and others, who were once skeptical, asked to join the program. A second round of group cessation support was added in April to help additional employees go tobacco-free in time for the July enactment date.
It has been just over a month since initiating this policy and Pamai Cano, Human Resources Director, feels the employees have adopted a positive mindset about the change. Although Koloa Landing Resort & Spa (Autograph Collection) fall under the Marriott brand, their policy is for their specific resort.
Thank you, Koloa Landing, for setting the example for other businesses who will hopefully follow your lead to protect the health of their employees.
