Local Maui youth wins National Student Safety Program’s Student of the Year Award

Congratulations to Sierra Sales, of Maui, for receiving the Shining Star Award as Student of the Year for the National Student Safety program! Working closely with Maui’s Community Coordinator, Sierra Sales has been an active member of the state-level Coalition of Tobacco Free Hawai‘i Youth Council for the last two years. As a leader of the Maui Nui Youth Council, she has grown as a youth facilitator and advocate for tobacco control priorities and has met with policymakers to push for the smoke-free vehicles initiative being considered now.

In addition to meeting with leaders locally, Sierra has attended the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) conference in Washington D.C. as part of her training as a youth facilitator for Maui Nui Youth Council. As one of the Youth Council student facilitators, Sierra has assisted in the planning, organizing, and facilitating of retreats and monthly meetings for youth in Maui County. Sierra, along with the other youth council members, also helps to determine priorities and policies to pursue in reducing tobacco use, underage drinking, healthy eating and obesity prevention in Maui County.

Sierra’s passion and dedication to the health and wellbeing of her community is commendable and give us hope for her generation. Congratulations to Sierra on all of her well-deserved award!
