The Healthy Eating + Active Living (HEAL) Coalition for Maui, Molokaʻi and Lanaʻi welcomes new coalition coordinator Lauren Loor! Lauren is originally from New York City and began her work in public health interning with The Partnership for a Healthier New York City while finishing her Masters in Public Health at Long Island University Brooklyn(LIU). She graduated with Honors from LIU in May 2015 as the first student to complete a dual degree 3 +2 program for Public Health.
The scope of work for The Partnership for a Healthier New York City included healthy eating, active living, tobacco and alcohol abuse prevention for coalitions in all five boroughs. Lauren then went on to become the coalition coordinator for the Manhattan office and helped to close out the Community Transformation Grant that had funded the coalition. The position as a coalition coordinator led Lauren to become a Nutrition Instructor for the LIVE HEALTHY! Program at the New York Common Pantry. As a Nutrition Instructor, she was able to facilitate USDA curriculum to SNAP recipients of all ages and was able to start a Farmer’s Market education program for the LIVE HEALTHY! Program in East Harlem and the Bronx.
Like so many, Lauren fell in love with Maui when she visited for vacation in the summer of 2015 and promised herself she would live on Maui one day. A promise she fulfilled!
Lauren is excited to get to work with the HEAL coalition to tackle the health disparities that affect the community on Maui the most. At the Strategic Planning meeting on November 9, coalition members deliberated and decided what activities would be the top priorities for 2018. We hope to keep the excited, positive and productive energy from this meeting going as specifics of our action plans are implemented in 2018.
