New look, same goal: End the sale of flavored tobacco in Hawaiʻi!

With the headlines filled with deaths and illnesses related to the e-cigarette (or vaping) product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) outbreak, it’s important to remember that the youth vaping epidemic is still spreading unchecked in Hawaiʻi, hooking a new generation on nicotine, and undoing decades of steady progress.

Selected by the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawaii’s Youth Council as their policy priority for 2019, ending the sale of flavored tobacco in the state received a lot of public support both at the state capitol and beyond. Unfortunately, bills that would have ended the sale of flavored tobacco were unsuccessful in 2019.

The Youth Council, and the Coalition as a whole, decided to continue the fight against the youth vaping epidemic by continuing to work on eliminating the sale of flavors in 2020. The “Flavors Hook Kids Hawaiʻi” campaign is a joint initiative of the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, and the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawaiʻi, a program of the Hawai’i Public Health Institute. Over 200 other organizations have already signed on to support the campaign. Building on last year’s momentum, Youth Council members have already begun raising awareness on their campuses and in their communities. In order to push legislation over the finish line this year they need your help!

Let your legislators know now that you support ending the sale of flavored tobacco in Hawaiʻi, via email, phone or letter. A short clear message from a constituent can make a real impact! Don’t know who your legislators are? Visit our state legislature website and and use the Find your Legislator tool in the top right corner.

Let us know if you would like a presentation to your organization about the campaign and why ending the sale of flavored tobacco is so important to our keiki.  Check out the Flavors Hook Kids HI campaign website  for more ways to get involved.
