Over the past nine months, HIPHI and the Hawai‘i Public Health Training Hui (Hui) has brought you a plethora of webinars and trainings. When the pandemic started in March, we knew we had a responsibility to share information with our communities. We kicked off our COVID-19 Public Health Action (PHA) webinar series with Lieutenant Governor Dr. Josh Green in April and over the past months, have covered topics spanning from emerging needs of childcare, the economy, mental health and food access to better support and inform our communities.

Our November PHA webinar celebrated Community COVID-19 success stories. We partnered with Chauncey Hatico from Hui Mālama Ola Nā ‘Ōiwi, Olivia Pascual, RN, BSN from Lāna‘i Community Health Center and Rich Yust from the Maui Food Bank. The stories they shared shed light on what has been a dark time for many and reminded us to pause and celebrate all the amazing work being implemented in our communities.

On December 4, 2020 the Hui partnered with the Pacific Survivor Center (PCS) to present, their Sex Trafficking Outreach and Prevention Program (STOPP) Community Training. PSC is a Honolulu based non-profit dedicated to providing healthcare to survivors of sexual and labor trafficking. Due to the nature of the training, it was not recorded, but we are happy to announce that we will partner with PSC again for our February 2021 Training. For more information on PSC and the STOPP program please visit their website or complete the information form here.

For our final PHA webinar of the year, we welcomed Beth Giesting, Director of Hawai‘i Budget and Policy Center, and Jill Tokuda, Special Advisor to the Hawai‘i Data Collaborative to discuss Hawaii’s State Budget and CARES Funds: What to expect in 2021. We gained insight into fiscal pressures our state is under and examined the issues around the dollars and decisions that are vital to our economic recovery.

As we approach the end of 2020, the Public Health Training Hui thanks all of you for your interest and support over this past year. We’ve collectively hosted 31 trainings: 21 COVID-19 PHA webinars, 6 Hui trainings and 4 partner trainings. There were over 19,000 views of our PHA webinars on our Hui YouTube channel and social media, and our listserv grew to over 4,000 members strong. We could not do this work without the support of our partners and community members like you! If you are interested in receiving PHTH training notifications, please email Steph Moir at stephanie@hiphi.org to join. Mahalo nui loa for attending our webinars and trainings and we look forward to having you join us again in the new year.
