For the first time since 1984, Mauna Loa on Hawai‘i Island began erupting on November 27, 2022. The Hawai‘i State Department of Health said the eruption at Mauna Loa could negatively impact air quality, and is urging those with respiratory conditions to take precautions.

The Executive Office on Aging has purchased Better Choices, Better Health (BCBH) workshop seats for kūpuna to stay healthy.

  • This is a free opportunity available through the end of December.
  • As providers increase telehealth services, peer support programs like this online workshop are an ideal way for patients to stay healthy and connected at no additional cost.
  • A year-long peer-reviewed study of the in-person and online version of BCBH demonstrates lower A1C, a reduction of symptoms like pain and depression, and a decrease in utilization of emergency inpatient and outpatient services.
  • Weekly lessons and guidance from trained facilitators support participants in increasing physical activity, managing symptoms, and reducing isolation. For more information, visit eligibility-hawaii.selfmanage.org/eoa.

Educators of grades 3-5 are encouraged to apply for Food Experiences for Agricultural Science Training (FEAST) Pedagogy and Resources. 

  • Teachers will learn to use FEAST materials for experiential learning, and teach lessons that develop knowledge of food and garden topics.
