Just like that, 2020 is upon us! Once again, 2019 has been a jam-packed year for HIPHI and we thank all of you for helping to make Hawai’i a healthier place. In 2019, we celebrated two legislative wins for the Obesity Prevention Task Force: making children’s meals in restaurants “Healthy by Default” by offering water, milk, or 100% fruit juice as the default beverage, and expanding access to healthy Hawai‘i-grown produce for low-income families through the Double Bucks program. We also co-hosted two conferences: Pūpūkahi I Holomua: For and About Community Health Workers, and the 14th National Conference for Immunization Coalitions and Partnerships.
HIPHI also launched the Hawai‘i Coalition for Oral Health, and continued to educate more than 5,000 students, parents, and teachers on the harms of e-cigarettes. We led five Perspectives on Community Health trips with a Farm to School focus in October and convened three Perspectives trips on Oʻahu during National Public Health Week in April. Of course, we did not do any of these activities alone. Our partners and advocates help to make all of our work possible. Thank you all for your help and support to continue our work!
HIPHI was also fortunate to increase our fiscal management work providing services to a new East-Hawai‘i underage drinking coalition and a new statewide underage drinking coalition. With our reach continuing to grow, we have expanded our staff and office space, leasing additional space on the 6th floor of our building. We appreciate those who joined us for our office blessing in November and a special mahalo to Keawe Kaholokula for providing the blessing. Click here to view some of our photos from the year.
As the year comes to a close, we would also like to thank Joy Barua, Kaiser Permanente for his service on HIPHI’s board for six years. We extend our heartfelt gratitude and HIPHI is honored to work closely with both Joy and Kaiser. HIPHI’s passionate partners and volunteers are our greatest assets.
With your partnership, HIPHI continues to support Hawai‘i in various ways with health as our focus. As we head into 2020, please consider making an end-of-year tax-deductible contribution. Every dollar counts and stays in Hawai‘i.
On behalf of our staff and board, we wish you and your family a very safe, healthy and happy holidays!
Mahalo Nui Loa,
