Overall, 2017 was a year to celebrate.
HIPHI was fortunate to continue collaborating with many amazing partners and to embark on some new endeavors with new partners. This year, we began work on a youth-driven, counter-marketing campaign addressing the dangers of ESDs. Through this work, we partnered with SeaRider Productions, Olelo Youth Xchange Contest, and six Department of Education schools throughout the state. This work planted the seeds for what would become a major campaign, 808NoVape, in 2018.
At the local level, the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawai‘i was successful in passing smoke-free vehicles (when a minor is present) in the City and County of Honolulu. We truly appreciate all our partners, advocates, and youth who helped to push this measure through in three short months!
In the face of an oral health crisis in Hawai‘i, HIPHI partnered with the Department of Health on oral health town hall meetings where we engaged community members and partners across the state to identify needs and challenges. The feedback from these listening sessions will be used to create a strategic plan to improve oral health statewide.
We also partnered for the first time with the Hawai‘i Primary Care Association and Department of Health on ho’ola, the Hawai‘i Health Care Conference. Stakeholders in the health care industry and leaders from other social sectors gathered to learn about and share the unique public health issues facing all of Hawaii’s people and to plan solutions to address them. We were blessed to have former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy with us speaking on current issues of health care, the impact the change in administration has made on prevention, and the intersection of social and emotional wellbeing.
In October 2017, HIPHI welcomed Hawai‘i Farm to School Hui (Hui) as a program. The Hui is a statewide network comprised of island-level networks, community organizations, and state agencies whose mission is to strengthen Hawaii’s farm to school movement through collective impact. This new partnership enhanced HIPHI’s HEAL work and further supported its goals towards obesity prevention. At the same time, HIPHI provides much-needed support and opportunity for the Hui to expand its network and policy work.
As HIPHI continued to promote and expand our Perspectives on Community Health trips, we wanted to be able to capture the many stories and lessons that arose from those visits and share them with our partners. An interactive story map was launched this year to share what we learned from these “in the field” trips and hopefully spark further interest and foster collaboration in public health across different sectors.
While we were disappointed that HIPHI’s legislative priorities did not pass in 2017, we did release our first legislative recap, providing a comprehensive overview on the outcome of public health bills introduced during the legislative session. The recap, which was well received by lawmakers and partners, also reviewed the budget and the amount of funding provided to public health efforts and provided a broad overview of proposed federal actions that would impact public health.
We have a lot to be grateful for and we thank you, our partners, advocates, donors, dedicated board and staff. We look forward to continuing our work with all of you!

2017 Highlights
Hawai‘i Farm to School Hui (Hui) transitions to HIPHI.
The statewide network to strengthen Hawaii’s farm to school movement joins HIPHI as a core program. The Hui was formed in 2010 and is comprised of five island-level networks, community organizations, and representatives of the Hawai‘i departments of agriculture, education, health, and the University of Hawai‘i.
Launched the first public health legislative recap.
HIPHI releases Hawaii’s first-ever, post-legislative session report on how key public health priorities fared in the 2017 legislative session. The recap helps advocates and Hawai‘i residents understand the major health issues discussed during the legislative session, how these policies may affect them, and why so many of these bills die in committee.
Passed Smoke-Free Vehicles in Honolulu.
Honolulu City Council acts to protect our keiki from the toxic effects of secondhand smoke and vapor in vehicles. Their unanimous vote sends a strong message to kids across Oahu that they have been heard and that their health and wellbeing matters to their government.
Partnered with SeaRider and students on vaping counter-marketing campaign.
A new partnership is cemented between SeaRider and HIPHI to better understand what messages work with youth on the dangers of vaping. The foundation is laid for a countermarketing campaign to begin in 2018.
Coordinated oral health town hall meetings across the state.
HIPHI partners with the Hawai‘i State Department of Health Family Health Services Division to facilitate a series of strategic planning town hall meetings to gather input from stakeholders on each island. All collected input will help shape a new statewide strategic plan on oral health due to be completed in 2018.
Launched Perspectives on Community Health storymap.
Over the last few years, HIPHI has organzied more than 40 daytime outings to help government officials, public health workers, and advocates visit organizations impacting health in their own communities. This year, we launched an online interactive story map to share some of what we learned through these inspiring, educational visits.
Partnered with HPCA and Department of Health on Ho‘ola conference.
HIPHI partnered with Hawai‘i Primary Care Association (HPCA) and Department of Health to bring together hundreds of health care workers and public health professionals to share and learn at ho’ōla: The Hawai‘i Health Care Conference.
New Programs: Hawai‘i Farm To School Hui
The Hawai‘i Farm to School Hui is a statewide network comprised of five island-level networks, community organizations, and representatives of the Hawai‘i departments of agriculture, education, health, and the University of Hawai‘i.
The Hui formed in 2010 and became a program of the Hawai‘i Public Health Institute (HIPHI) in 2017.
The Hui’s mission is to strengthen Hawaii’s statewide farm to school movement by supporting our island networks in the areas of capacity building, resource development and sharing, professional development, policy development, and advocacy.
The Hui envisions a holistic education system that renews our relationship to food, farming, and the environment, improves health, and raises academic achievement. The vision is for Hawai‘i to be a center for agro-ecological education and food production and a model of regenerative community food systems for the Pacific and the world.
